The European Parliament’s Delegation for Relations with the Mashreq countries conducted an official visit to Jordan, led by Chair Isabel Santos, who was accompanied by Cyrus Engerer.

The visit, taking place from December 18th to 22nd, aimed to strengthen diplomatic ties as well as to gain insights into Jordan’s political and economic agenda.

“We visited two refugee camps – one that still hosts Gaza refugees from 1967, when 170,000 fled from the Israeli attacks on the strip ; and a refugee camp that hosts 50,000 Syrians,” Engerer said.

During the visit, the delegation engaged in discussions with key Jordanian officials, including Prince El Hassan Bin Talal, Speaker of the House of Representatives Ahmed Safadi, and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ayman Safadi.

During the 11th Inter-parliamentary Meeting, the delegation expressed deep concern about the ongoing war in Gaza, emphasising the urgent need for a humanitarian ceasefire and access to aid.

Members reiterated the European Union’s commitment to a two-state solution, recognizing Jordan’s vital role in maintaining the international consensus on Jerusalem.

Speaking about media coverage, Engerer said that what worries him most “is how much of this will be forgotten the minute the media’s cycle changes. We barely hear anything about then Russian aggression on Ukraine any more. At some point the suffering will continue going on but it will disappear from our TV channels and newspapers.”

Commending Jordan’s efforts in hosting Palestinian and Syrian refugees, the delegation began engaging with civil society representatives on human rights and gender policies.

To gain a firsthand understanding of the challenges faced by refugees, the delegation visited UNRWA Palestinian Refugee camp of Wihdat and the Syrian Refugees camp of Azraq. These visits provided valuable insights into the living conditions and ongoing struggles of displaced populations.
