Emergency shelter, Dar Merħba Bik, posted a statement condemning remarks in the media degrading people who have experienced domestic violence.

The NGO’s comments follow a comment that was posted to social media by Mqabba’s deputy mayor, Jonathan Dingli, who compared Adrian Delia to “women who like to be beaten.”

“We will continue to relentlessly emphasise how much work is still needed in our society to promote dignity, respect and equality. This is the only truly ethical and accountable way to rectify any wrongdoing,” wrote the NGO in a statement.

Since the incident, the deputy mayor has removed his comment and issued a public apology pledging to donate two months’ salary to Dar Merħba Bik. However, the NGO stated that there hasn’t been any communication with regards to donations has been received.

The NGO reiterated its mission to uphold the value and dignity of all women above all else.
