De La Salle College Set To Participate In Chess Championships In Washington D.C.

De La Salle College is gearing up to compete in the prestigious World Schools Team Chess Championships, set to take place in Washington D.C., USA.
The college earned its place on the global stage after an impressive performance in the Chess Interschools Qualifiers held last April, where three De La Salle teams competed among 50 teams and over 150 students. Two of these teams ranked in the top six, qualifying to the finals.
During the finals, which formed part of the first edition of the Malta Schools Games, organised by the Ministry for Education, Research and Innovation in collaboration with Sport Malta, the Malta Olympic Committee (MOC), and the Malta Schools Sports Federation (MSS), De La Salle’s team clinched victory with a flawless result, earning the right to represent Malta in the world championship.
The team that will participate in the Team Chess Championships will be composed of Gabriel Gauci, Gabriel Grech, Benjamin Calleja Falzon, Matthew Callus, and Luke Micallef Trigona. They will be accompanied by team captain and coach Duncan Vella from the Malta Chess Federation
The championship will consist of eight games, played in the rapid format, with 45 minutes (plus a 10-second increment per move) of thinking time per player. Four players will compete in each round, alternating between playing black and white.
The students are currently undergoing intense training ahead of the competition, which for many of them will be their first experience competing abroad.
