Disability Benefit Fraud Reveals Deeper Ties To Labour Party As PN Calls For Urgent Parliamentary Session

Following the recent report by the Times of Malta on the disability benefit fraud involving ex-Labour MP Silvio Grixti, new testimonies and evidence continue to surface, pointing to a broader involvement within the Labour Party

In our previous report, Dr. Silvio Grixti, a renowned family physician and former Labour MP, was implicated in a widespread fraud scheme. By allegedly providing false medical documentation, he enabled recipients to claim monthly social benefits for severe disabilities they did not possess. The fraudulent claims, which primarily cited epilepsy, required falsified documents, including EEG reports and certifications from neurologists or psychiatrists.

Just recently revealed to the Times of Malta, a long-time Labour supporter, speaking under anonymity, shared a detailed account of how he was approached and enticed into the fraudulent scheme. A former minister’s aide and a Labour Party canvasser were instrumental in this proposition. These claims suggest the scheme wasn’t merely an isolated operation by Dr. Grixti but had deeper roots within the Labour Party’s operational structures.

Many beneficiaries, including those who were not directly aided by Dr. Grixti, underwent a startlingly quick verification process, often lasting just a few minutes. This hastiness, observed consistently across testimonies, raises questions about the integrity of the entire verification system for disability benefits.

The Nationalist Party (PN) has intensified its response by urging an immediate Parliamentary session on Monday concerning the deepening benefit fraud controversy.

European Parliament President Roberta Metsola adds to the clamor, spotlighting the systemic corruption within Malta. Metsola’s stern warning on Facebook highlights the urgent need for reform: “It’s corruption designed to defraud the most vulnerable.” As pressure mounts, all eyes are on the Maltese government’s next steps.

Furthermore, sources told Times of Malta about the potential involvement of middlemen who acted as facilitators, connecting potential fraudulent claimants to those running the scheme, implying a more organized and wide-reaching operation.

While many claimants admit to their wrongdoings, the majority have expressed intentions to repay the ill-gotten funds. Their testimonies reveal a mixed bag of emotions – from guilt to betrayal. One sentiment, however, remains consistent: a concern that the “big fish” might evade justice, leaving the more vulnerable to face the consequences.

The Prime Minister’s Office responded to a report, emphasizing that suspected abuses in 2021 were promptly reported to the police, highlighting their stance against illegality. The office refuted allegations of directing any illegal activities and urged individuals making claims to produce evidence to aid police investigations. Despite existing measures against abuses within social benefit systems, the Government plans to evaluate and strengthen these processes further. The Government also dismissed the Nationalist Opposition’s claims of vote-buying abuse as unfounded, underscoring their commitment to addressing such issues proactively unlike previous administrations.

In light of these revelations, the Social Policy Ministry has announced a comprehensive review of the assessment procedures for disability benefits. Led by retired judge Antonio Mizzi, the goal is to identify potential weak points and suggest necessary reforms.

While allegations continue to mount, the local political tension is rising and gaining attention in the international scene.
