Malta Classic, the organisers behind the upcoming Mdina Grand Prix, has expressed its disappointment at the local councils’ reaction to the event.

Earlier today, the Mtarfa, Rabat and Mdina local councils strongly came out to oppose the upcoming Mdina Grand Prix, warning of it negatively impacting residents.

“From our side, we are mainly disappointed by the council’s reactions to the event,” one of the organisers told Lovin Malta.

“We fully acknowledge the inconveniences caused by the closure of roads for this event, but we also understand that this is only a two-day activity that happens once a year – that hasn’t happened in two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic,” they said.

“We were hoping that there would be more cooperation and communication from the local councils’ side,” they said, especially given that this event is returning after a two-year break.

“We are hopeful that the event still goes through after all this work – we are not going to stop working for this event to happen, and we hope the authorities help us and notice the event’s importance.”

“This is one of the few motorsport events in Malta that brings people from all over the world, also being reported in various magazines and newspapers abroad so it’s a good opportunity for tourism as well.”

The organisers from Malta Classic confirmed they are currently speaking with authorities to see if the event can go through as planned, as preparations are underway in full swing.

Listing reasons why this event should not happen in the planned area, the local councils stated that it can bring “severe inconvenience for the residents and the serious danger resulting from the great congestion that is created during the event”.

The Mdina Grand Prix welcomes car enthusiasts of all ages, to showcase and celebrate some of the world’s most iconic cars. However, organisers and local councils had previously butted heads over the show in past years.
