Domestic Violence Reports Surge By Approximately 11% In Malta
Recent figures disclosed in parliament have shed light on a concerning increase of reports of domestic violence in Malta. With around 426 increase of reports in the span of four years.
These figures, disclosed by Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri in response to an inquiry from Opposition MP Darren Carabott, highlight a pressing societal concern.
The number of reported incidents has steadily climbed over the years: 1,645 cases in 2020, 1,741 in 2021, and 1,828 in 2022. These statistics highlight the prevalence of domestic violence and emphasise the need for effective intervention measures.
The severity of the issue was further emphasised with the tragic murder of Bernice Cassar née Cilia in November 2022.
Bernice, a mother-of-two who had filed multiple police reports against her estranged husband, was fatally shot on her way to work while awaiting a court hearing.
In response to heightened scrutiny following her death, Minister Camilleri announced the establishment of Malta’s first domestic violence and gender-based violence centre in Santa Luċija.
This initiative, aligned with recommendations from a judicial inquiry, aims to provide vital support to abuse victims. Plans are also underway to open a second hub in the north of the island, expanding access to essential services
