Drivers Urged To Avoid Swieqi-Pembroke Road Until February 2024 By Infrastructure Malta
Infrastructure Malta has urged commuters to avoid the main road between Swieqi and Pembroke until February which is when this phase of the Pembroke Junction project is expected to be finalised.
CEO of Infrastructure Malta Ivan Falzon gave an update on the project yesterday and he explained that the current focus is on the creation of two “hairpin” turns near the Luxol grounds.
This is aimed at addressing the traffic bottleneck coming from Swieqi and allowing drivers from both sides of the main road to change direction.
Temporary routes will be introduced next week until the end of November and they consist of new diversions around Swieqi which drivers are urged to follow.
“Follow diversion signs and use these visuals to help you plan ahead your route when traveling to/from Swieqi,” Infrastructure Malta wrote on social media.
Moreover, current traffic lights will be replaced with a more efficient pedestrian crossing located in the middle of these hairpins.
Despite the alternative routes, Falzon is urging road users to use other alternative routes such as through Burmarrad and it-Telgħa t’ Alla u Ommu.
Meanwhile, work is also being done to upgrade underground services and build a new entrance into Pembroke.
Once this part of the project is completed, Infrastructure Malta will widen the road between the entrance to Pembroke and Villa Rosa, followed by the building of a flyover to replace the Regional Road lights that lead to Valletta.
A Planning Authority application is expected to be submitted by Infrastructure Malta by the end of the year.
For this project, a green area on the periphery of Pembroke was cleared out to widen the main road which ignited controversy. In response, Infrastructure Malta declared that it would plant 258 trees and shrubs within the same site and transplant other trees within the area of the project.
This announcement has already received some criticism with residents and road users alike concerned about the regular traffic that this closure may cause.
