Owners of residential scheduled Grade 1 and 2 buildings have the chance to be fully refunded for the restoration of their building’s facade, as long as the amount does not exceed €15,000.
The Irrestawra Darek scheme launched by the Planning Authority (PA) set aside €1 million for the reimbursement of these works.
Beneficiaries of the scheme will be chosen according to a lottery system, unlike the previous renditions of the scheme operated on a first-come-first-serve basis.
Applicants also won’t need to involve an architect at the early stages and they can submit their interest in the scheme either by applying online or visiting the PA offices.
PA will reimburse 100% of restoration fees that do not exceed €15,000. The refund will also include up to €800 for professional charges – including periti fees – as well as €200 for the Local Council permit fees.
Works eligible for the refund include specialist cleaning of the facade (not sandblasting, power washing, or chipping), repair/replacement of doors, apertures of traditional timber/masonry/wrought iron balconies, and the replacement of aluminium/PVC with traditional materials.
“Owners of scheduled buildings carry a high responsibility to ensure that their property does not incur damages and is maintained. We are aware that for some owners this may be a burden. We consider it to be our obligation to assist and support owners of residential scheduled,” the Executive Chairperson of the PA stated.
For the lottery system, every submission will be assigned an exclusive number that’s put in a carousel. These numbers will then be withdrawn in a public draw which will be held at the PA offices in Floriana.
Successful applicants will then be told to contact their architect and start the process for the submission of a formal application which will include the submission of a restoration method statement and a bill of quantities.
Residential owners of these properties can submit their interest from tomorrow (16th November) at 8.00am until 12.00pm on 6th December. The subsequent draw will take place the following Monday at 9am.
