An €18 million regeneration plan has been launched for Marsaskala, Ministry for Transport, Infrastructure and Public Works Chris Bonett announced.

The wide-ranging project will be overseen by Infrastructure Malta, and promises major upgrades to the promenade, public spaces and a new fast-ferry service to Valletta.

About 1.5 kilometres of promenade will be refurbished, with new benches, shaded relaxation areas, and a modern children’s playground designed to be secure. The slipway will be rebuilt, and a fast ferry terminal established in Marsaskala. To support the ferry service, there will be a 350-space park-and-ride facility at Sant’ Antnin, along with a circular bus route linking to Marsaskala according to Malta Independent.

According to government projections, the ferry service is expected to remove about 21,900 car trips annually. It should also save around 76,700 litres of fuel, which is estimated to be worth €103,000 per year in costs. Emissions will be reduced, and no existing swimming zones will be impacted.

A survey, conducted by statistician Vincent Marmara, found that 59% of residents support the ferry service, citing convenience and reduced traffic. Around 24% oppose it and 17% are undecided. Major concerns relate to environmental impact, weather conditions, and possible parking issues.

Marsaskala Mayor Mario Calleja said the project is a “much-needed boost,” pointing out that the town has suffered since the Jerma Hotel closed and with growing waste issues. He believes the intensified public works especially in arcades, Fajtata Gardens and parking areas, will revitaliSe Marsaskala for locals and visitors alike.

Chris Bonett emphasised that the government’s aim is not to punish car users, but to offer better alternatives. He underlined that the fast-ferry service, backed by new bus links and parking, could serve up to two million passengers yearly. “If we leave it abandoned, it will remain abandoned,” he said.
