€20,000 Raised As Khim Bahadur Pun’s Family Seeks Justice After His Death

The family of Khim Bahadur Pun, the 42-year-old Nepalese Wolt driver who lost his life after an accident in Birkirkara on Sunday are concerned for their way forward.
Times of Malta reported Pun’s family depended on him to cover daily expenses and are now “worried about how his young family will cope,” his sister said. “He would send money every month to cover the children’s fees, school bills, housing bills, everything.”
She continued about how the family was full of “anger and frustration” over the loss of Khim, describing him as a “vibrant soul” who was taken away too soon.
“The circumstances surrounding Khim’s death are unacceptable. This was not an accident; it was a reckless act that resulted in the loss of a precious life. We demand justice for Khim,” his sister Nardevi said, highlighting how the driver must be held accountable for their actions.
The 17-year-old unlicensed driver was arrested after the hit and run, and pleaded not guilty to causing the death of the Nepali national and driving under the influence after appearing in court on Monday.
Khim’s wife found out about her husband’s death through his brother’s wife. “She fainted when told and has not stopped crying since,” Nardevi said.
His eldest son, 14, knows about the death of his father but his youngest two, an eight-year-old son and six-year-old daughter haven’t found out they won’t be seeing their father again.
“He was a good person and always looked out for others in our community. He was always ready to help someone in need,” she explained. “My family and I are so sad and upset as we lost a huge pillar of our family.”
Nardevi said she briefly chatted with her older brother just one day before the accident. “He told me he was coming back to Nepal very soon. He told me that, after three or four months, he would be back.”
After almost €25,000 was raised in funds by the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA), Khim’s body will be repatriated on Wednesday after a final farewell to Khim by the Nepali community outside Mater Dei at 9am.
The money raised will also help the family cover funeral costs and help keep the family on their feet until a way forward can be found.
The fundraiser is still open and accepting donations. Funds will go directly to Khim’s family and support them till they find their footing again.
“Seeing this huge support towards the GoFundMe page for Khim shows the kindness and solidarity not only within our own Nepali community but also from the Maltese and other friends around us,” Rems Khanal, NRNA president said.
