Ed Sheeran Wins US Copyright Case Over ‘Thinking Out Loud’
British singer and songwriter Ed Sheeran has won his copyright case which has denied stealing elements from Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s Get It On” when composing his song “Thinking Out Loud”.
The US court has ruled that Sheeran is not guilty, as the heirs of Gaye’s co-writer stated that he owed them money for copyright infringement.
The British singer stated that he would give up his music career if he was found guilty, “If that happens, I’m done, I’m stopping”.
Sheeran was “obviously very happy” with the court result, saying “It looks like I’m not going to have to retire from my day job after all”.
“But at the same time, I am absolutely frustrated that baseless claims like this are allowed to go to court at all.”
One musicologist for Sheeran’s defense told the court the four-chord pattern was used in many songs before “Let’s Get It On” came out.
