EU Council Should Urge For Permanent Ceasefire In Gaza, Robert Abela Declares
Prime Minister Robert Abela has urged the Council of the EU to call for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza while in Brussels for the quarterly meeting of the EU member state leaders.
Abela responded to Secretary-General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres’ speaking about the situation in Gaza, including the ever-increasing death toll, the limited water, and the devastating food shortages saying that this is a “wake-up call for the European Union”.
He stated that while there is some movement in contrast to the initial silence within the Council regarding the crisis in Gaza, Malta is still unsatisfied with the lack of a call for a permanent ceasefire in the conclusions.
“It is good that we provide humanitarian aid with European funds, but we must also press for a stop to the fighting.”
He further said that the situation in Gaza is appalling and reiterated the call for a permanent ceasefire. He emphasised that the EU and the UN can collaborate more on the Future Pact that addresses oncoming challenges which, if ignored, humanity will end up paying for. Here, Abela specifically referred to climate change.
Abela ultimately added that the United States has drafted a new UN Security Council resolution calling for an “immediate ceasefire” in Gaza, amid mounting pressure on Israel to halt its military campaign and allow the delivery of substantial amounts of humanitarian aid into the Palestinian territory.
“Europe cannot afford to be lagging behind.”
