Public health and climate change have been revealed as the main topics Maltese citizens feel should be the European Parliament’s top priorities.

This was revealed through a Eurobarometer survey which was published by the European Parliament earlier today, as part of the lead up to the 2024 MEP Elections.

When asked which of the following topics would citizens like to see addressed and prioritised, public health and climate change garnered an equal amount of votes, followed closely by the fight against poverty and social exclusion.

Next up came migration and asylum, democracy and the rule of law, and consumer rights.

Meanwhile, when asked which are the most important values the European Parliament should be defending in this day and age, democracy and rule of law this time round took the highest priority.

This was followed by the protection of human rights in the EU and also on a worldwide level, and freedom of speech and thought.

The survey also found that 73% of Maltese people think the European Parliament should be playing a much more important role, up by 5% since the last surveys.

Meanwhile, 70% of Maltese expressed their desire to vote in the upcoming MEP elections, while 17% said that it’s not likely they would be participating in the elections.

The action was co-financed by the European Union in the frame of the European Parliament’s grant programme in the field of communication. The European Parliament was not involved in its preparation and is, in no case, responsible for or bound by the information or opinions expressed in the context of this action. In accordance with applicable law, the authors, interviewed people, publishers or programme broadcasters are solely responsible. The European Parliament can also not be held liable for direct or indirect damage that may result from the implementation of the action.
