Fabio Spiteri Wants To Raise €100k For Animals Ahead Of ‘Brutal’ 1,130km Triathlon
Ultra-endurance athlete Fabio Spiteri is already preparing for his next triathlon – and this one’s going to be more brutal than ever.
As part of the efforts for the mammoth challenge, Spiteri is raising €100,000 to be donated to animal shelters in the country.
“I, as most people know, am always involved in these crazy big races and events,” Spiteri told Lovin Malta.
“Fresh from cycling around Sicily non-stop last September, which saw 1,000km in 47 hours and 41 minutes, making me the second person ever to complete it under two days, I’ve now just signed for a World Cup race in France which will take part on 27th June amongst 16 athletes from all around the world,” he explained.
“The race is brutal. It consists of a 19km swim, 900km bike and 211km run in a continuous format. This means no proper sleep – just a few power naps here and there,” he said.
“I am targeting to finish the race in around four days. This will be my longest ever non-stop race, exceeding the previous Sicily one,” he expressed.
As the challenge fast approaches, Spiteri is currently training intensively.
“This was a build-up of a one-year preparation,” he said. In terms of cycling, he journeyed around Sicily non-stop for 47 hours, along with numerous 100km and 300km bike rides, a 12-hour turbo trainer indoors and two 500km bike rides.
For running, he ran several 42km marathons, a session of eight 10km runs with an hour* rest in between and one 60km run.
He has also been doing night training to avoid the summer heat and also as an adaptation to sleep deprivation.
“The appetite for such a race comes after doing several ironman races, double ironman, triple ironman, now follows the quintuple 5x ironman!”
“I have two passions in life – sports and animals. Once again this year I want to fundraise for all animal shelters and cat feeders around Malta and Gozo. Since it’s a big brutal race where I have to really dig deep into my inner reserves, I am targeting €100,000 to be distributed to all shelters, considering the big problems they face every day especially now that they are full,” he said.
