Five Down, Five To Go: Fabio Spiteri Places First In Brazil Deca Triathlon’s Halfway Mark
Ultra-athlete Fabio Spiteri didn’t just make it to the halfway mark of his ongoing Deca Triathlon in Brazil – he also placed first!
With five down and five more to go, Spiteri is well on his way to becoming the first Maltese man to ever complete such as race.
“Blister burst during the last 5km making the last push feel like hell, but managed to pull through till the very end,” Spiteri wrote after completing the fifth day.
“Respect to Alejandro Rivas Venegas who pushed me all the way and was breathing down my neck for the whole run,” he said.
The feat brings together a 3.8km swim, a 180km bike ride, and a 42km run – every day, for ten days straight.
The world cup race is being held in Brazil, and when he completes this Herculean daily trial – ten times – he’ll have covered 38km of water, 1,800km of cycle paths, and 420km of running routes.
This means that once the challenge has been completed, 48-year-old Fabio will have covered a distance equivalent to more than half of the length of Brazil – the world’s fifth-largest country.
Making it all even better, this physical challenge is all in support of Fabio’s love of animals as he aims to raise €100,000 for overwhelmed local animal shelters.
