FKNK President Labels BirdLife Malta ‘Extremists’ As Turtle Dove Saga Continues
FKNK President Lucas Micallef has labelled BirdLife Malta’s latest attempt to prevent spring hunting of the vulnerable turtle dove as “extreme”.
This comes after the environmental organisation filed a request for a prohibitory injunction in court against the government in order to stop it from issuing the legal notice that effectively would open a spring hunting season for the vulnerable turtle dove.
“Today we are once again witnessing a maneuver from an extremist group, a group that has no respect towards democracy, a group that only creates division, confrontation, and intimidation,” Micallef wrote on social media.
“We are seeing actions originating from this group not agreeing with others’ regulated practice, and thus wants to purely ruin others,” he claimed.
“Irrelevant of all this, we will not give up. They did not make us give up in the past, nor will we give up now.”
Speaking with Lovin Malta, Micallef explained that there are a number of reasons why the federation wants to continue to hunt the vulnerable turtle dove.
This included, but was not limited to, the FKNK’s voluntary studies carried out during the turtle dove hunting seasons of autumn 2021 and 2022 and spring 2022, as well as its ongoing existing wild turtle doves population augmentation project.
However, it’s important to note that the EU Commission recently threatened to take legal action against Malta if it continues to hunt the vulnerable turtle dove.
Do you think the vulnerable turtle dove should be killed during this spring season?
