Foreign Minister Calls For Ceasefire After Israel Announces Plans For Gaza Takeover

Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism, Ian Borg, took to X to appeal for a ceasefire in Gaza following Israel’s plans for Gaza this morning.

“Malta urges the Israeli Government to reconsider its announced plan to intensify operations in Gaza. Hamas must disarm and play no part in Gaza’s future, but further escalation by Israel is wrong. It will worsen the humanitarian crisis and the cruel conditions in which hostages are being held,” wrote Borg on X.

His post follows a plan that has been confirmed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office, to take control of Gaza.

Earlier this morning, the five-point plan was revealed in a statement to “defeating Hamas” and to “conclude the war.” This plan was approved by a majority vote and follows Netanyahu’s previous statements which detailed Israel’s intention to take over all of the Gaza Strip. So far, the plan only mentions Gaza City.

The plan lists five objectives: disarming Hamas, returning all hostages, demilitarising the Gaza Strip, taking security control of the territory, and establishing “an alternative civil administration that is neither Hamas nor the Palestinian Authority”.

The United Nations has warned that a complete military takeover would risk “catastrophic consequences” for Palestinian civilians and Israeli hostages held in Gaza. The UK’s ambassador to Israel has said it would be “a huge mistake”.
