Former Labour Policy Advisor: ‘Last Night I Saw What Drew Me To The Party Dwindle’
Former Labour policy advisor and feminist activist Pia Micallef has opened up on rejecting an opportunity to contribute to the Labour Party’s online portal following the decision taken last night – after 15 years of working for Labour.
The Labour Party is currently facing nationwide backlash after government members voted wholeheartedly against a public inquiry being opened into JeanPaul Sofia’s death.
Micallef took to her Instagram story just a few moments ago to denounce the party, saying that last night, she saw what drew her to the party dwindle.
“Today, I rejected an offer to contribute to the Labour Party’s online portal. I took this decision because I do not have the heart to do so after PL MPs yesterday voted against a public inquiry into the death of Jean Paul Sofia,” Micallef said.
She continued to say that this is the bare minimum she could do in the face of so much “pain and injustice”.
“I joined the PL in 2007. I joined because I wanted to be part of a movement which safeguards the people I care about the most: workers, minorities, the vulnerable. And for years, until very recently I was always proud of this.”
Micallef worked closely as a policy advisor for 15 years, with politicians such as Miriam Dalli and Cyrus Engerer.
“Not blindly, because political parties are reflective of people: reactive, emotive, and sometimes flawed. But I believed that just like people, the path back to righteousness and kindness would always be found. And that eventually, we would always come back round to our roots,” she expressed.
“But last night I saw what drew me to the Labour Party dwindle. I saw the spark and the flame go out.”
“This isn’t the party our forefathers built. It certainly wasn’t last night. The party that I know wouldn’t do this. And I know that I am not the only one who feels this sentiment.”
“I can only hope that this mass, overwhelming and deafening outcry shakes the PL to its senses.”
She concluded by encouraging friends and followers that it’s okay to realise you were wrong and to re-evaluate.
“As long as you have the courage to fix that path. As long as you have the courage to remember where you came from.”
Contacted by Lovin Malta, Micallef didn’t wish to add anything else to her statement.
