A former radar station in Ras il-Qammieħ, Mellieħa, is getting a new lease on life as it is set to undergo restoration to become an astronomy and wildlife surveillance centre.

The €279,000 project, led by Ambjent Malta, aims to transform the site into a hub for science, nature, and outdoor activities.

The works include demolishing unsafe structures, reconstructing buildings, and installing outdoor equipment.

The project, approved by the Planning Authority, will also introduce picnic areas, additional greenery, and spaces repurposed for astronomy and other activities.

Originally built in 1938 for British military use, the site later served as a U.S. radar station under NATO’s communication network. However, the station became obsolete in 1970 and fell into disrepair, with decades of neglect and vandalism taking their toll.

Now, the area is poised to regain its purpose, offering an accessible space for both science and nature enthusiasts.

Whether you’re stargazing under the night sky or observing local wildlife, the revamped site will blend its rich historical significance with a fresh, community-centred mission.
