46th Anniversary From Unsolved Murder Of 15-Year-Old Karin Grech

Today marks the anniversary of the murder of the teenage Karin Grech who was tragically killed by a bomb after unveiling what she thought was a late Christmas present.

On 28th December 1977, the 15-year-old Karin noticed a brown envelope containing a package adorned in Christmas wrapping. Believing it was a belated Christmas gift, the girl proceeded to open it.

The ‘present’ concealed a bomb that detonated in her face, with her brother bearing witness to the tragedy.

Karin died at the hospital thirty minutes later.

46 years after the murder, no individual was ever formally accused or convicted in connection to Karin’s murder and the case has evolved into a political controversy.

Authorities have expressed suspicions that the murder may have been orchestrated by medical students. However, each passing year diminishes the likelihood of justice being served.

PN leader Bernard Grech, who happens to be Karin’s cousin, posted to his social media to remember his relative’s murder.

“Her murder remains a dark stain on our country’s history and a terrible day for my family.

Today, uncle Edwin has found out who killed his daughter, not because the case has been solved, but because he too has passed away.”

The father of the letter-bomb victim, former labour Minister Edwin Grech, died earlier this year, in March.

Grech implied that while the father may have found closure in his afterlife, presently, the case still has not been solved and justice is yet to be served.

Throughout the years, the opposition leader, along with other high-ranking politicians, such as PL’s Chris Fearne, have urged police to keep trying to solve the murder.

In 2011, the victim’s father disclosed that he possessed information indicating that a cohort of fourth and fifth-year medical students had engaged a criminal bomb expert to craft the explosive device responsible for his daughter’s death.

He also contended that a political interference hindered the resolution of the murder case, alleging that a lawyer with political ties had permitted medical students to utilize his office as a meeting venue.
