Fr Jimmy Bartolo has stepped down from his position as Rector at St Aloysius College after 12 years, with the possibility of a layperson taking over the role for the first time in the school’s 118-year history.

Fr Bartolo will be moving to Rome in January 2026 to take on a global role as the Jesuits’ Secretary for Secondary and Pre-Secondary Education, overseeing Jesuit schools worldwide.

His departure marks the end of an era for the Birkirkara-based college, which has been led exclusively by Jesuit priests since its founding in 1907.

The school has now opened applications for a new Rector, welcoming candidates from laypersons, diocesan priests, and religious congregations—a first in St Aloysius’ long history.

While this marks a significant change, the Jesuits will continue to have a presence at the college, with the Rector still expected to uphold its Jesuit and Ignatian ethos while guiding its strategic direction.

During his tenure, Fr Bartolo played a crucial role in shaping the college’s vision, leading it through modern educational challenges while maintaining its strong traditions.

Under his leadership, St Aloysius continued to be one of Malta’s most well-regarded schools, with notable alumni including Prime Ministers Eddie Fenech Adami, Lawrence Gonzi, Joseph Muscat, and Robert Abela.

His new role in Rome follows years of dedication to Jesuit education, and he will now be responsible for supporting and developing educational institutions worldwide.
