From Resilience To Recovery: Fundraiser In Aid Of Maltese Lifestyle Coach Severely Injured In Traffic Accident

A Maltese lifestyle coach endured two extremely traumatic events in the space of one year. After going through open-heart surgery, he is now recovering from a traffic accident that may have cut his 38-year competitive bodybuilding career short and has left him with no stream of income.

So, one of his former clients opened a GoFundMe page to help the 57-year-old cover his medical expenses, support his young son, and ensure that he can maintain a decent standard of living.

Lovin Malta had the privilege of speaking with John F. Xuereb, a well-known figure in the fitness and lifestyle industry here in Malta to dive deep into his story of resilience and determination.

“Accidents are a reality of life, but the consequences of negligence on the road can lead to tragic outcomes,” he said.

John is a fitness and lifestyle coach, currently living in Mosta, originally from British Columbia, Canada. He came to Malta in 2011 with a unique business model aimed at empowering and educating the country about taking control of their lives, fitness, and wellness goals.

Throughout he’s career, he’s dedicated himself to helping others lead healthier lives. He’s written books, set up programs, and opened channels to share what he’s learned about health with those who want to hear it.

In July 2023, he underwent emergency open-heart surgery that left him unable to work for an extended period. This took a huge toll on John’s life, hindering his ability to sustain himself, fulfill his responsibilities, and support his young son.

While facing this period of transition, and finally getting back to speed, John was hit by another obstacle that would change his life once again.

Just as he was getting back into routine, while he was heading home on his scooter after a training session with a client, a car suddenly U-turned illegally and crashed into John. He injured his left tibia, knee joint, ligaments, and wrist.

“I was fortunate that kind individuals offered assistance until help arrived.”

John endured two surgeries to address extensive damage he sustained and he’s since continued his recovery at Mater Dei Hospital.

With an estimated timeline of around three months before he can begin walking and potentially return to training clients again, he grapples with the reality that his competitive bodybuilding career might be coming to an end.

“It’s vital to drive responsibly, follow traffic laws, and be mindful of the potential dangers posed by vehicles. My hope is that by sharing my story, others will recognize the importance of safe driving practices to prevent unnecessary harm,” he said.

However, due to the network of devoted clients that he’s built, a GoFundMe was set up by a dear friend of his back in Canada who’s determined to help John out until he’s back on his feet again.

“In Canadian circumstances, platforms like GoFundMe are commonly used to offer support to those facing difficulties similar to mine,” John explained.

“Unlike Canada, Malta’s support channels differ greatly, and the compensation framework for incidents such as mine is not as readily available or immediate. This lack of financial assistance will affect my living conditions immediately not to mention hinder my recovery process, including the necessary medical treatments to regain my previous state of health.”
