The Gasan Foundation took on the role of restoring and revitalising the villa at Majjistral Nature and History Park.

From funding the restoration works to supporting furnishing and final interior touches, the Foundation’s ongoing involvement has been key in transforming this British-era building into a space ready for its next chapter.

Recently, Majjistral Park hosted an event to celebrate the completion of the villa’s restoration and to acknowledge the many sponsors and partners contributing to the park’s transformation into a thriving example of conservation in action. At the event, the Gasan Foundation confirmed that it will continue its support by funding the villa’s furnishing and interior.

Originally part of the Għajn Tuffieħa Barracks, the villa had stood abandoned for decades before stewardship was taken over by the Heritage Parks Federation, which includes Din l-Art Ħelwa and Nature Trust Malta.

In 2022, the Gasan Foundation provided crucial backing that enabled restoration works to begin in earnest. Since then, extensive structural and aesthetic renovations have been carried out, including roof reconstruction, limestone façade restoration, and careful rebuilding of the villa’s defining colonnades.

Once fully completed, the villa will serve as a three-bedroom guesthouse, offering visitors a unique opportunity to stay within Malta’s first national park. Beyond accommodation, the project forms part of a sustainable model that supports ongoing conservation and education initiatives throughout Majjistral Park.

“The Gasan Foundation is proud to support projects that protect Malta’s heritage while giving it new purpose,” said Sarah Carbonaro, representing the Foundation. “Seeing The Villa brought back to life is deeply rewarding, and we are delighted to help take it one step further, turning this beautiful space into a place people can truly experience and enjoy.”

Stretching across six kilometres of coastline from Anchor Bay to Golden Bay, Majjistral Park is Malta’s first national park and a Natura 2000 site rich in biodiversity and cultural history. The park has become a symbol of how environmental protection, heritage restoration, and community engagement can coexist through collaboration.

“This project is a testament to what can be achieved when purpose meets partnership,” said Martin Galea, President of the Heritage Parks Federation. “The Gasan Foundation’s continued support has been instrumental in transforming The Villa from a neglected structure into a living part of the park’s story.”

The villa’s completion marks a key milestone in the park’s wider development plan, which includes the creation of educational spaces, ranger training facilities, a children’s camp, and inclusive amenities such as a multi-sensory room for visitors with diverse physical, cognitive and neurodevelopmental needs. It also includes dormitories for schools, scout groups, and other community programs, reinforcing Majjistral Park’s mission to combine heritage, conservation, and accessibility.
