Government Could Pay 17-Year-Olds €1,500 To Ride Mopeds As Long As They Don’t Drive A Car Until They’re 21

The Transport Ministry is considering offering €1,500 to 17-year-olds who apply for a moped licence instead of a car licence — on the condition that they don’t drive a car until they turn 21.

As reported by MaltaToday, the measure is part of a broader plan to reduce traffic by discouraging young people from contributing to the number of cars on the road.

Those who take up the incentive would be legally barred from applying for a driver’s licence for four years.

Another proposal under review involves paying €25,000 to drivers who surrender their licence for five years. This would target those who’ve owned a car and held a licence for at least seven years.
