In a move to alleviate the financial challenges faced by Gozitan students studying in Malta, the government has announced an increase in their monthly grant to €280, effective from Budget 2026.

This adjustment aims to address the additional costs associated with commuting and accommodation, which many students from Gozo incur while pursuing their education on the mainland.

Currently, Gozitan students receive €500 every three months, equating to approximately €166.60 per month. With the new measure, eligible students will see an increase of more than €100 monthly according to Times of Malta.

To qualify, students must be over 18 years old, permanent residents of Gozo, and enrolled in educational institutions in Malta. Approximately 1,000 Gozitans study full-time in Malta, and the initiative is expected to cost the government €5 million annually.

This grant enhancement follows the government’s decision to abandon the Dar Fatima student accommodation project in Pietà, which was initially planned to provide lodging for Gozitan students. After investing €90,000 in rent and architectural plans, the project was scrapped due to unexpectedly high refurbishment costs.

The government’s commitment to supporting students is further reflected in other budgetary measures, including increased birth and adoption bonuses and enhanced children’s allowances for low-income families. These initiatives underscore the government’s focus on investing in the future of families and youth in Malta.
