The Lands Authority and Heritage Malta have signed an agreement to initiate necessary works on the Qolla l-Bajda Battery in Qbajjar, Gozo, to eliminate safety hazards posed by the deteriorating structure.

The agreement allows Heritage Malta to immediately assign an architect to prepare and submit all required applications to the Planning Authority.

Meanwhile, the Lands Authority will issue tenders to secure the necessary services to carry out the works.

Following these initial safety measures, further discussions will determine the scope of additional works needed, guided by a commitment to respecting and conserving cultural heritage.

This historic battery, built in the early 18th century by the Knights of St. John, is the last of its kind in Gozo. Over the years, it has suffered significant damage, both from exposure to the elements and alterations made during its use by previous tenants.

The decision to act follows mounting pressure from the Żebbuġ local council and eNGO Din L-Art Ħelwa, who expressed concerns about delays in restoring the site.

According to Times of Malta, the council and NGO suggested that commercial interests may have influenced the lack of progress.

They noted that despite repeated emails sent to highlight the issue over the years, including to the culture ministry and the Lands Authority, these appeals were largely ignored.

The Żebbuġ council emphasised the urgent need for restoration, warning that damage to the battery could soon become irreversible.

Din L-Art Ħelwa also reiterated their willingness to assist with funding and restoration efforts but expressed frustration over the prolonged inaction.
