While all Malta seemed to be jammed in stop-start traffic, university students bypassed the chaos in their bicycle bus yesterday morning.

Student organisation MKSA put together a group of people who cycled from Mosta, through Birkirkara and ended at University in time for their 8am lecture.

“21 people, both students and non-students believed in what we promoted – a way of showing people that even though this country’s planning may have not exactly been the best when it comes to bicycle lanes, safer and quicker routes can still be found,” stated Tasha Schembri, President of MKSA.

The cyclists beat the traffic while thousands were stuck in several localities due to maintenance works as well as the Eid al-Fitr celebrations in Paola.

While many of the students claimed this was their first time cycling to university, many said they’d be open to doing it more regularly, both as a more efficient as well as a more sustainable option.

The event was led by Steve Zammit Lupi, Żebbuġ councillor and cycling advocate, who took to social media to emphasise the importance of such events.

“Thank you to the drivers who showed us respect while we were cycling. There is a need for similar initiatives in order to raise awareness and convince people that we need to be the change we want to see.”
