Gżira Mourns The Red Man: ‘One Of Its Most Interesting Residents’

Gżira is mourning the loss of Nicholas James Marson, who was also known as the ‘Red Man’.

Marson was “always seen cycling around, usually laden with odds and ends- presumably for feeding the cats and ducks- and always decked out in red. Different shades, different items, but always red,” Mark Camilleri wrote in a touching tribute to Facebook.

“He was clearly eccentric,” he continued, “but in a gentle, harmless way.”

The Red Man used to water the plants along the Gżira promenade, as well as feed the ducks, birds and cats in the town.

The Mount Carmel band club broke the news of Marson’s death to Facebook, noting that he used to lend many a helping hand during the festa and even helped the band club out when possible.

“Rest in peace, Mr Marson. I hope the cycling lanes are safe wherever you’re heading. You will be sorely missed by all the cats and ducks of Gżira and Manoel Island, but you will also be missed by many neighbours, and by those who work nearby,” Camilleri added, “Thank you Mr Marson, for adding a much-needed splash of (quiet) colour to Gżira.”

Rest in Peace Red Man.
