ADPD deputy chairperson Sandra Gauci has spoken out about the firing of her political colleague and fellow educator Mario Mallia.

Mallia spoke out earlier today on how he was removed from his position as headmaster of St Albert the Great College over his efforts to create a more inclusive and participatory curriculum across different religions.

“I have known Mario since the first day I started in politics. All I can say is that he is a role model both as a professional and on a human level,” Gauci told Lovin Malta.

“He gave his life to that school and his loyalty and total commitment should be something to admire and not to be cast aside so easily,” she stated.

“Hopefully whoever decided this goes back on his decision and admits the mistake being made,” she said, referring to the board and the rector of the college.

Earlier today, it was revealed that Mallia was fired from his position as headmaster after disagreements with the board of the college on a number of inclusive initiatives.

“Just to explain the context, basically, we managed to build a community which is inclusive and diverse, we have children of all shapes and kinds, different religions and orientations, and obviously including different genders as well,” Mallia told Lovin Malta.

“That meant that we had to work towards making sure that we reach out to every child. So, we had a number of initiatives, one of which was the creating a culture of encounter through a particular space in the curriculum called ‘MEET’ through which students of different religions could come together and discuss what makes them different and respect those differences.”

“And, basically the rector and the board of the college pulled the plug on the subject.”

The college also had various issues with Mallia’s involvement in politics, with Mallia simply saying that he feels that this is an extension of his role as an educator.
