‘Here We Go Again’: Isabelle Bonnici Urges Minister For Answers After Gżira Construction Site Collapse

Isabelle Bonnici disappointedly spoke out about a recent incident that saw scaffolding in Gżira crash into a road.

She stated that Malta does not need to wait for the outcome of the public inquiry into her son’s death before it does something about the dangers of the construction sector.

Isabelle asked a myriad of questions to Minister for Reform of the Construction Sector Johnathan Attard before finally saying “With words alone our children will continue to die, only actions can save them”.

A facade and scaffolding of a Gżira construction site crashed onto Triq Belvedere, with CPD’s rescue workers instantly being mobilised to the scene.

The incident happened earlier this afternoon and it was confirmed that nobody sustained any injuries.

“Here we go again,” Għal Jean Paul, a Facebook page run by his mother, Isabelle, wrote.

“Do we need to wait for the public inquiry report and recommendations to come out in March before we do something? Did my son have to die for the necessary investigations in this sector to take place, which only a public inquiry could initiate?”

“In this case, did no one check anything? Who was building? Were the contractors qualified? Did the architect do their job properly? Did the relevant departments do their work? Was there enforcement on safety? Who will be held responsible for this serious failure?” she said, echoing some of the tragic findings of the Magisterial Inquiry into the factory collapse that killed her son.

“I am asking Minister Jonathan Attard, who now has the responsibility for Construction Reform, to give us the information the people need. What is being done? What will be done? Words alone will continue to see our children die; only by actions can we hope to save them!”

Do you think Malta needs to act faster with regard to ensuring a safer construction sector?
