6 Beautiful Maltese Museums To Check Out This Summer

Malta’s history is an extremely colourful one. The country boasts some of the most beautiful neolithic temples in existence, alongside Roman, Phoenician Carthaginian, and Norman remains. We’re also lucky enough to have had the Knights of St. John’s architectural, and cultural influence echo through our cities, in tandem with both french and British rule. Fortunately the history of Malta can be easily enjoyed thanks to some brilliant museums around the island. Here are six of our favourites. Enjoy!

1. National War Museum

Location : Fort St Elmo, Valletta.

Opening Hours: Monday to Sunday 9– 6pm

Prices:

  • Adults (18 – 59 years): €10.00
  • Youths (12 – 17 years), Senior Citizens (60 years & over), and Students: €7.50
  • Children (6 – 11 years): €5.50
  • Infants (1 – 5 years): Free

Collection: Houses two halls dedicated to Malta during World War 1 and World War 2, along with a unique collection of prehistoric items.

2. National Museum of Archaeology

Location: Republic St, Valletta

Opening Hours: Monday to Sunday 9am – 6pm

Prices:

  • Children (6 -11 years): €2.50
  • Infants (1 -5 years): Free

Collection: The museum houses items found from the Neolithic Period (5000BC) up until the Phoenician Period (400BC).

3. Malta Maritime Museum

Location: Ex-Naval Bakery Vittoriosa Waterfront, Birgu

Opening Hours: Monday to Sunday 9am – 5pm

Prices:

Collection: Encased in this beautiful building, one can find information pertaining to Maltese history within the Mediterranean, along with many models and historical artefacts.

4. Ħaġar Qim & Mnajdra Temples

Location: Triq Hagar Qim, Il-Qrendi

Opening Hours: Monday to Sunday 9am – 5pm

Prices:

  • Adults : €9.00
  • Concessions €6.50

Collection: Two extraordinary temples, along with many artefacts found within them.

5. Wignacourt Museum

Location: College Street, Rabat

Opening Hours: Monday to Sunday 9:30am – 5pm

Prices:

  • Adult €5.00
  • Senior (61+) €3.50
  • Students (12+) €3.50
  • Children (7-11) €2.50
  • 6 and under – Free

Collection: Showcases and underground level with Punic, Roman, and Christian Hypogea architectural features along with World War II shelters. The main space houses art work by talent local artists as well as other European artist, along with collections of relics of the Order of the Knights of Malta.

6. Inquisitor’s Palace

Location: Triq Il-Palazz Ta’ L-Isqof, Il-Birgu

Opening Hours: Monday to Sunday 9am – 5pm

Collection: The only Inquisitors palace open to the public offering historical reconstructions of how it would have looked during its prime.
