Watch: ‘I Am Not Calling For War’ – Metsola Releases Video To Counter PL ‘Spin’
Roberta Metsola hit out at media house ONE and Labour Party figures who have criticised her latest moves, saying “I am not one to reply to ridiculous stories issued by Super One, but this time I’m going to make an exception.”
In a video posted to her social media platforms, Metsola said that the Labour Party spun her words to create a “false” narrative as to what was said, calling the statements made by PL figures such as Alex Agius Saliba and Clint Azzopardi Flores “ridiculous” and “dangerous”.
Earlier this week, Metsola urged the EU to spend more money on defence to “prepare for any eventuality”.
The EU Parliament President spoke to Politico after US presidential candidate Donald Trump suggested he would “encourage” Russia to attack NATO members that don’t meet their financial obligations.
In the social media video, the EP President said “it’s as though, all of a sudden, they forgot all about the Armed Forces of Malta,” and went on to say “as if our country’s army and naval base don’t need EU funds.”
“Or perhaps, they don’t know the difference between attack and defense,” Metsola added.
She then went on to say that “the biggest hypocrisy of all is that the Prime Minister agreed” with her statement, adding that Robert Abela “cannot and doesn’t know how to make a decision,” and “keeps making U-turns day after day.”
“He’s a Prime Minister who remains hostage,” Metsola continued. As soon as the EP President uttered this phrase, a picture of Joseph Muscat and Abela came up, which alludes to the fact that Metsola believes that the former holds the latter “hostage”.
She went on to say that whenever the Prim Minister talks about her, he cannot bear mention her name, and simply refers to her as “she”.
Among those who criticised Metsola’s statement was PL MEP Alex Agius Saliba who said that along with other MEPs, he formed a coalition “in favour of peace and dialogue.”
“If Metsola and the EPP are so preoccupied by nuclear weapons, war and fighting, we arae going to be working towards more dialogue in this time of frenzy and global insecurity,” Agius Saliba wrote in a social media statement, adding that “in order to please the Americans and the producers of destructive warfare, Metsola has forgotten that our Malta was always the greatest negotiator in favour of peace and dialogue.”
Meanwhile, PL MEP candidate Steve Ellul wrote that while Metsola “wants to splurge money collected from European taxpayers on more missiles and arms,” he wants the EU to “spend more money on farmers, fishermen, families, our workers, and on the development of small businesses.”
“This is a classic example of European leaders being detached from reality while they live in the ivory castles they built for themselves,” he continued.
