‘I Look Forward To Eating There’: PN MP Slams Boycotting Calls And Extends Support Towards Mġarr Restaurant
PN MP Eve Borg Bonello has extended her support and solidarity towards a restaurant facing boycott calls, saying she’s looking forward to eating there herself this week.
This comes after a beloved family restaurant in Mġarr was facing boycott calls and online abuse after the owner was spotted at the latest protest in Valletta.
“This is why people are afraid to stand up to be counted in this country. They’re targeted, intimidated, and threatened individually,” Borg Bonello wrote on social media.
“This is what happens in an authoritarian state when you stand up to the government. Mafia state,” she said.
“Extending my full solidarity and support, looking forward to eating at Il-Barri Restaurant this week.”
The restaurant was directly targetted yesterday through a Facebook post by Matthew Bongailas, who called him out for attending a public protest on the recently confirmed fraudulent Vitals-Steward deal.
“Good to know that’s your thanks to the Prime Minister for keeping your business alive during the pandemic, you should be ashamed of yourself,” Bongailas wrote.
However, people quickly rose to the defense of the well-known restaurant, with many people saying that the boycott calls will only make them go there even more.
“Come on friends, let’s all join forces together and leave a message of support for the owner of Il-Barri restaurant, I don’t know why there are all these personal attacks just because he’s expressing his opinion. We’re back to the 80s,” Terry Muscat wrote on Facebook.
“Next dinner out, I’m going there with my family. What did he do, steal millions from the country like Labour did?” Godwin Schembri wrote.
The protest, Tuna l-Isptarijiet Lura, was called by the Nationalist Party, following former party leader and MP Adrian Delia’s landmark win of his case against the Vitals-Steward hospital deal.
Will you be going over the restaurant for a dinner sometime soon?
