Labour mayor Christian Zammit has just resigned from his position as the mayor of Xagħra after 23 years in politics.

Zammit also resigned from his position as a councillor at the Xagħra local council, as well as the President of the Labour Regional Committee.

“This was a very difficult decision to make, considering that I have been active in the party and in politics for the last 23 years. However, there comes a time, when in Italian, they say, ‘mi tolgo dai piedi e tolgo il disturbo’,” Zammit said on Facebook.

The Italian saying that Zammit quoted roughly translates to “I’ll leave and get out of your way”.

Zammit was known as one of the most vociferous mayors of Gozo, who was very outspoken when it comes to environmental degradation.

Lovin Malta attempted to reach out to Zammit, however, an answer was not given at the time of publishing.
