In a move to strengthen international cooperation and enhance public safety, the Malta Police Force has launched its first joint patrol initiative with Italy’s Polizia di Stato.

This collaboration follows a Memorandum of Understanding signed in December 2024 and is designed to boost police visibility, assist Italian tourists, and foster operational exchange between the two forces.

From 21st July to 17th August, four Italian police officers will be patrolling alongside Malta’s District and Community Policing Teams in Valletta and St Julian’s — two of the island’s busiest localities, especially during the summer season.

The initiative is set to facilitate communication with Italian-speaking tourists, promote mutual learning and operational exchange between the two police forces and reinforce a proactive, community-focused approach to policing

While the visiting officers will not be carrying weapons or holding executive powers, they bring valuable expertise in public order and international law enforcement collaboration.

This joint effort forms part of the Malta Police Force’s Transformation Strategy 2020–2025, which aims to build a smarter, more connected policing model grounded in community engagement and cross-border cooperation.

Malta is no stranger to international policing partnerships. Earlier this year, Maltese police officers joined patrols in Nice, France, continuing the country’s commitment to collaborative law enforcement and shared public safety responsibilities across Europe.
