‘In The Same Sea’: Young Maltese Poet Draws Stark Comparisons Between Palestine And Europe

A young Maltese woman wrote a poem for Palestine and read it out during this weekend’s march organised by youths.

Amy Briffa’s poem is entitled In The Same Sea and through it, she compares the children in Europe to those within Palestine, highlighting the two contrasting realities occurring in Mediterranean countries.

Briffa begins by painting a picture of a young, presumably Maltese boy running in a Halloween costume alongside his mother, ready to search for sweets.

While scrolling on her phone, however, she was confronted with tragic footage of a young Palestinian boy lying on a hospital floor.

Further on in the poem, Briffa states that Europeans’ worries cannot compare to the “unimaginable” experiences endured by Palestinians in Gaza.

She calls for humanity while admitting that she “can not understand” how this is happening.

A few thousands turned up in Valletta last Saturday, including many youths, to show their solidarity with Palestine and all those affected, as the conflict continues to grow and cause widespread destruction and fatalities.

The demonstration heard many powerful speeches, one of which urged the world to stop being “blind and deaf” to the plight of her people while the other blasted EP President Roberta Metsola, accusing her of “betraying the Maltese”.
