Infrastructure Malta Says Marsaskala Arches Are Undergoing Reconstruction Works
Infrastructure Malta responded to concerns put forward by Marsaskala Residents’ Network following ongoing demolition works taking place under the promenade on Triq is-Salini.
“Over the years, the arches have suffered extensive deterioration, leaving them in a dilapidated and unsafe condition. The structure posed a danger to public safety, and in recent months, the arches were temporarily supported to eliminate immediate risks until reconstruction work could begin,” wrote Infrastructure Malta on social media.
The current intervention aims solely to remove the hazard to the public and to provide the promenade with a safe and stable structure according to Infrastructure Malta. The works aim to rebuild the arches from the quay level on stronger foundations anchored directly to the rock, ensuring that the new structure is constructed on solid ground and a firm base.
These works are being carried out following consultations with the Environment and Resources Authority (ERA) and the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage, and are executed in accordance with the permit issued under Cap. 552, Article 70(d) of the Development and Planning Act according to Infrastructure Malta.
As part of the Marsaskala Promenade regeneration project, Infrastructure Malta will rebuild the arches forming part of the promenade in the area known as Tas-Siberja.
