A touching tribute poem dedicated to suspected murder victim Rita Ellul has been shared publicly as Malta reels from the shocking news.

As stated in the poem itself, the tribute was penned by one of her cousins, Sefora Tabone, the woman behind I Am Diego, who often speaks up about social issues.

The poem, titled ‘Insellimlek għax int mara‘ speaks about their past memories together, while also expressing the sadness and melancholy that such dreadful news brought.

“I salute you because you are a woman, a woman like me and many others, that in this dark world, you found comfort in those arms,” the poem reads.

“I salute you as your cousin, as soon as I found out about the news, my eyes immediately darkened, and reddened with tears,” Tabone wrote.

“I remembered about our times, that we spent together, and I found solace in the thought, that you are in a better place than I am,” she wrote.

“But I am not just saluting you, because you are my blood, but because in this cruel world, you did not find a place of shelter,” it reads.

She spoke about the love that Rita had for her partner, and how this essentially led her to her death.

“I salute you dear woman, this love has now killed you, you did not deserve this death, your love killed you, and removed you from the world,” the poem reads.

“I love you Rita,” she concludes.

Ellul is believed to have been strangled to death, the Times of Malta reported, with police sources saying the victim may have been suffocated with her bed’s duvet.

Police arrested two men initially – a Ghanaian and a Maltese man – with the murder. The Ghanaian is set to be charged today.
