Isn’t It Ironic? Plaque Commemorating Tree Planting Crushes Nearby Sapling In Viral Photo

A photo currently making the rounds on social media is going viral for its sheer irony – or is it a perfect portrayal of environmental affairs on the island?

The image shows a plaque that was placed with the intention of commemorating a tree-planting project along Dingli Street in Sliema.

As a result of what could be either poor installation or just bad weather conditions, the plaque ended up crushing a nearby sapling that was planted as part of the project.

“I cannot think of a better illustration of the efficiency of our Planning Authority,” one reaction read on social media.

Meanwhile, Ugly Malta reposted the image with a captioned message reading “government greening initiatives summed up in one photo”.

The tree planting project mainly revolved around introducing new saplings as an attempt to green the urban area.

The slab of stone features the logos of the Planning Authority, the Sliema Local Council, and the Development Planning Fund.
