It-Teatru Tal-Miskin’s Final Shows Made Accessible For Deaf And Blind Communities
Local original queer production ‘It-Teatru tal-Miskin’ is making some of its final performances accessible for Malta’s deaf and blind communities.
On the last day of performances, 20th November, they will be hosting a “touch tour” for their blind or visually impaired (BVI) audience members, at Msida’s Blue Box M space.
“BVI patrons will be invited to come into the theatre before the performance to explore the space, handle props, and costumes, and be provided with extra details to enable a most engaging theatrical experience,” one of the actors told Lovin Malta.
A touch tour is usually held before a theatre production to provide context about the show and to allow blind and partially sighted members of the audience to familiarise themselves with the design of the space, costumes, and props ahead of the show itself.
“Audience members get the chance to walk on the stage before the theatre opens and can touch and feel props, costumes, and physical pieces of the set,” he explained.
“Having this experience ahead of a live theatre performance gives blind and partially-sighted theatre-goers the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the show content and space.”
On Sunday at 3pm, they will be performing a matinee with English subtitles to give an opportunity for expats and foreigners to come and watch the Maltese show.
“We will also be performing with Maltese subtitles during the 7.30pm show for the benefit of the deaf community,” he explained.
“As Saydon Studio, we are so driven to make our theatre accessible for all. There are entire communities in our audience pool who have no choice but to feel not included in the local theatre scene,” creator Luke Saydon told Lovin Malta.
“If we are doing theatre with no barriers we as theatre-makers must remember the importance to provide access to our work. We hope we reach out to new audiences, and more importantly that every piece of theatre put up in Malta keeps accessibility as a priority.”
