It’s Hot Out Here: This Is How To Take Care Of Yourself In The Maltese Heat

Living in Southern Europe in the summer days, a frequent topic of conversation will surely be the neverending heat that these months come with.
The realities of global warming are only adding to the heat stress and the occasional heatwave almost makes life unbearable.
With more temperatures set to soar within the next few days, and with summer having pretty much half of it left to go, here are some tips to survive the scorching heat.
1. Stay hydrated
This might seem like an obvious one, but you’d be surprised how much fluids we lose through sweat in summer. Everyone’s different, but on average one should be drinking around two to three litres in the hotter months – depending on your body weight!

2. Keep a salty snack with you
Just in case you get a point that you’ve lost way too many fluids and you’ve run out of water, it’s always good to keep a salty snack with you to replace the salts lost. Electrolytes are also always a good way to go!

3. Take a cold shower or an ice bath
At some point during Malta’s summer, even the sea stops cooling you off, as the water’s temperature would have risen considerably. Having super cold showers or even taking it a step further with an ice bath is always an option.

4. Wear light-coloured clothes
This might be a hard one for those that enjoy wearing darker coloured clothes, but you’d be surprised what a difference it makes to keep the body cool. Apart from that, it’s always good to wear flowy items, and stick to natural materials!

5. Sunscreen is a must
Technically, we’re supposed to wear sunscreen daily in winter – let alone in summer. So unless you want to have the skin of a 60-year-old by the time you’re 40, invest in a good sunscreen. And it’s always good to find one that’s reef-and-environmentally friendly.

6. Early morning dips or sunset swims
With the UV index going as high as 11, some days it’s literally not safe to be out in the sun’s rays. So why not try to go swimming in the early morning or in the evening, to avoid those harmful rays?

7. Get those cucumbers and watermelon in
Did you know that cucumbers are actually a fruit and belong to the same family as watermelon? Both watermelon and cucumber are known to be wonderfully cooling remedies for the hot summer heat, so stock up!
