Fifth Volunteer Centre of the Malta Council for the Voluntary Sector has been officially inaugurated in Paola. The centre, named the Jake Vella Volunteer Centre, was inaugurated by the Minister for Inclusion and Volunteering, Julia Farrugia Portelli, together with the Chief Executive Officer of the Malta Council for the Voluntary Sector, Mauro Pace Parascandolo.

This centre will provide space and support, equipped with facilities, for voluntary organisations in the southern region of Malta. It is the fifth such centre opened by the Malta Council for the Voluntary Sector, following those in Valletta, Rabat, Birkirkara, and Xewkija in Gozo.

In her speech during the inauguration, Minister Julia Farrugia said that with the opening of this centre, another important electoral pledge of the government has been fulfilled, namely, the creation of more modern and accessible spaces for voluntary organisations.

“In the south of Malta alone, we have around 290 voluntary organisations, many of which do not have a building of their own. One of our electoral promises was to open a fifth centre for these organisations, to meet the demand from groups that don’t necessarily have a meeting space. We view Jake as a figure who made a positive impact not just locally, but on a national level. So we want this young man to continue serving as an inspiration, not only for other youths, but for all Maltese and Gozitan volunteers.”

From his end, MCVS CEO Mauro Pace Parascandolo expressed his satisfaction that voluntary organisations in the southern part of Malta will now also have access to a modern, fully equipped facility from which to operate year-round.

“This is the fifth volunteer centre to open this year. It will also be providing 24/7 services, giving organisations access to various meeting spaces where they can continue their work.”

Also present at the inauguration were Jake’s parents, Josie and Mariska Vella, who thanked everyone for the initiative to name the centre after their son,  a young man deeply passionate about volunteering, particularly in causes related to abandoned animals.
