Jason Azzopardi Reveals How He’ll Be Spending His Birthday Today
Prominent lawyer and ex-PN MP Jason Azzopardi has revealed how he will be spending his birthday today – and it doesn’t involve many birthday candles.
“I’m going to celebrate my birthday by defending Repubblika in two constitutional court cases on Pilatus Bank in the morning,” Azzopardi said on social media.
“Then, in the evening, I’ll attend the protest in front of Parliament, and after, the vigil to remember the killing of a journalist that exposed corruption in Pilatus Bank and Vitals Global Health.”
The now-infamous Pilatus Bank was shut down by the European Central Bank over money laundering allegations and has been subject to a slew of inquiries, including kickbacks on the citizenship-by-investment scheme between former OPM minister Schembri and Nexia BT’s Brian Tonna.
Rule of law NGO Repubblika had filed a judicial letter against the Attorney General last year, accusing the state prosecutor of refusing to charge a number of high-ranking individuals recommended for prosecution in the conclusions of the inquiry into Pilatus Bank.
Earlier this week Opposition Leader Bernard Grech also called a protest outside Parliament for today against the Vitals-Steward deal, in what would be its third such demonstration in recent weeks.
The protest will coincide with a debate in Parliament on an Opposition motion calling for the government to file legal proceedings against Steward to return the public funds it had received throughout the duration of the concession.
Today, Steward has just given notice to the government to terminate the Services Concession Agreement and related contractual framework following “breaches of commercial agreements”.
