Former Minister and Professor Edwin Grech, the father of Karin Grech, has died aged 94, without having seen justice delivered for his late daughter.

Grech’s daughter Karin was killed by a letterbomb 45 years ago in 1977, when she was just 15 years old, after she opened an envelope addressed to her father. 

His nephew, Opposition leader Bernard Grech, announced the news earlier today on social media.

“My dear uncle, Edwin Grech, has just passed away. A person who left everything behind and not only gave all his ability but also his family because he believed in the ideal,” Bernard Grech wrote on social media. 

“He was the person who inspired me that although I come from a working family from the south of Malta, I could enter the University and become a lawyer,” he said. 

“The man that helped my mum give birth to me, along with thousands of other women and couples.”

“Uncle Edwin, you will always be my role model for me, as you will for many others.” 

Prime Minister Robert Abela immediately chimed in as well, commemorating Grech as a person who gave everything for his country and for the patients he loved so much.

“He did this through his profession and politics. He made great sacrifices and because he placed others before himself he ended up paying with the murder of his daughter Karin,” Abela said. 

Gżira Mayor Conrad Borg Manche also issued a tribute to Grech, saying how although he never met him, he always felt for what he had to go through throughout his life.

“Poor father who had to live his life in immense sorrow after the killing of his daughter. Now you’ve gone to enjoy her in heaven, together with God,” Borg Manche wrote.

“You gave a lot to your country but your country failed you.”

Meanwhile, Environment Minister Miriam Dalli also addressed the shock she experienced when hearing the news of his death.

“The loss of Professor Edwin Grech makes me and many others very sad. A doctor, a politician, and a man above men who continued to carry with him until the end the trauma of the gruesome political murder of his daughter Karin,” Dalli wrote on social media. 

“A case that remains unsolved to this day.”
