Lilu King’s Arrest Declared Illegal, Now Faces Charges Without Being Held Behind Bars
Mohamed Ali Ahmed Elmushraty, otherwise known as Lilu King, walked out of court earlier today with a smile on his face after his arrest by police on Thursday night was declared illegal, Times of Malta reported.
This was decided because defence lawyer Franco Debono pointed out that the inspector had not informed the duty magistrate about the arrest. According to the criminal code, the duty magistrate must be informed within six hours to validate the arrest.
The entrepreneur and influencer is being charged for deliberately crashing a Mercedes Benz into a buggy while driving without a license and insurance, and breaching bail conditions. He will still face these charges but without being held behind bars.
Lilu King is currently on bail while awaiting trial for a court case, where he has been accused of laundering money, drug trafficking and involvement in organised crime.
The incident occurred at around 11pm when a car had allegedly crashed into a buggy. Inspector Eman Hayman was called to the scene and found an injured man laying on the floor. He was then told that Lilu King was involved.
Footage from the scene indicated that the crash may have been deliberate, according to the investigator. It further showed Lilu King step out of the Mercedes and speak to the buggy driver and a woman who Hayman said is an ex-girlfriend of Lilu King.
The injured man was taken to hospital for treatment but then left. He further refused to present a medical certificate to the inspector who tracked him down. The woman further told the police that she saw no one.
After hearing submissions, Magistrate Nadia Helena Vella declared the arrest invalid and ordered the defendant to be discharged.
Lilu King subsequently pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Lawyers Franco Debono, Adreana Zammit and Martina Herrera represented the defendant.
