On World Mental Health Day, prominent Maltese figures Lydia Abela and Sarah Bajada shared heartfelt messages urging compassion and understanding following a recent tragedy affecting a local family.

Lydia Abela, wife of Prime Minister Robert Abela, reflected on the sorrow faced by a mother and father, describing it as “difficult to imagine.” She emphasised that behind every tragedy lies hidden pain, fatigue, and confusion, often masked behind smiles or silence.

Abela called for courage, compassion, and kindness in everyday life, urging people to consider how they can help others in times of need.

Sarah Bajada, partner of Nationalist Party leader Alex Borg, also addressed the public on social media. She described the news as heartbreaking, particularly from the perspective of a parent. Bajada highlighted the invisible burdens many carry and the ease with which people can judge or comment without understanding the full story.

She encouraged others to pause before reacting and to choose empathy over judgment, emphasising that mental health is not just about what we feel but also about how we treat others.

Both statements serve as reminders of the importance of compassion, support and understanding for those facing invisible struggles in everyday life.
