This summer, Malta’s oldest theatre company, MADC, is set to make theatrical history with its first-ever production of King Lear, one of Shakespeare’s greatest tragedies, at the San Anton Gardens in Attard.

Continuing its beloved tradition of open-air Shakespeare performances, MADC’s 2025 edition of Shakespeare at San Anton Gardens promises an unforgettable experience under the stars. Booking is now open, with early bird tickets are available at just 25available for a limited time at www.madc.com.mt.

Directed by seasoned theatre-maker Chris Gatt, King Lear will be presented with a striking Game of Thrones-inspired visual aesthetic, designed by Nicole Cuschieri. Audiences can expect period costumes, atmospheric lighting, and the lush, historic gardens as a natural stage, adding dramatic flair to Shakespeare’s timeless tale of power, pride, and betrayal.

The play follows the downfall of King Lear, who chooses to divide his kingdom among his daughters based on how eloquently they profess their love for him. When his youngest, Cordelia, refuses to flatter him with empty words, Lear banishes her—setting off a tragic chain of events marked by deceit, madness, and loss.

At the heart of the production is Stephen Oliver in the formidable title role of Lear, alongside Faye Paris as Goneril, Daniela Carabott Pawley as Regan, and Melissa Mercieca as the principled Cordelia.

The cast also includes Michael Mangion as Gloucester, Simone Ellul as the Duchess of Kent, and Edward Caruana Galizia as the Duke of Cornwall. They are joined by Leah Grech, Alex Weenink, Daniel Formosa, Bernard Zammit, Taha Chaudhry, Sam Casha, Neil Cutajar, Shaun Rizzo, and Tyrone Grima.

Performances will run from 18th–21st and 23rd–27th July at 8pm, and are suitable for audiences aged 10 and above.

With its gripping story, stellar cast, and magical setting, this production of King Lear is set to be a must-see cultural event this summer in Malta.
