Making History And Striking A Work-Life Balance: Here Are The Biggest Achievements And Greatest Challenges Of Malta’s Top Politicians This Year
2024 brought with it exciting highs and extreme lows with Maltese politicians achieving incredible feats amid turbulent international, local, and even personal affairs.
From historic electoral results to attempting to break the Maltese political duopoly, here is what some of Malta’s top politicians struggled with and celebrated this year.
1. Bernard Grech
Biggest achievement:
“The Vitals money Court appeal victory.”
Hardest challenge:
“Breaking the sad news of Karl Gouder’s passing to NET Media employees and volunteers.”
2. Robert Abela
Hardest challenge:
“Undoubtedly inflation. To tackle the rising cost of living, we took decisive action through the Stabbiltà initiative, working closely with various stakeholders and extending the energy subsidy. These efforts led to a remarkable reduction in inflation, bringing it down from over 6% to 2.5%. While this progress is significant, we recognise that the challenge persists. That’s why the largest tax cut in history is set to take effect in 2025. This measure promises to significantly boost salaries across the entire working class, with a particular focus on supporting middle-class families.”
3. Byron Camilleri
Biggest achievement:
“Setting up the first 24/7 hub for victims of domestic violence in Santa Luċija. The Centre is offering various services of support and professional assistance by professionals, Members of the Police Corps and trained employees from various entities to help and give service to victims of domestic violence.”
Hardest challenge:
“Being a father to a one-year-old daughter while serving as a Minister with long work hours has undoubtedly been challenging, but also incredibly rewarding.”
4. Roberta Metsola
Biggest achievement:
“I have to say June’s electoral result and my re-election as President of the European Parliament in July.”
“It followed months of hard work and campaigning, reaching out to as many people as possible to convince them to vote. And people did vote for the politics of hope, and the June’s election was a proof of that. The vote by the Maltese and Gozitan people puts a greater responsibility on me than ever before, and I will be working with more determination and energy to be part of the wave of change for a better country and a better Europe.”
Hardest challenge:
“Trying to convince young people to vote and to not give in to easy cynicism. The tribal hyper-partisanship we see too much of in Malta turns them away from politics, but they responded in June in a huge way and that shows that not only does they care, they understand the power and responsibility they have.”
5. Arnold Cassola
Biggest achievement:
“Working on three different books at the same time. Hoping to see them published in the future.”
Hardest challenge:
“Competing against the political duopoly as an independent…and doing well.”
