Malta Becomes Second Choice For Wealthy Americans Seeking Second Citizenship

Malta is quickly rising up the ranks as one of the most popular destinations for Americans seeking second citizenship — and most of them aren’t even planning to move here.
According to global residency firm Latitude, 25% of its US clients are now choosing Malta’s citizenship programme, second only to Portugal’s Golden Visa, which holds 50% of demand. Caribbean nations trail behind at 15%.
What’s driving this? According to Latitude, it’s all about having options.
Around 80% of applicants say they have no immediate plans to relocate, but want the security of a second passport, a “Plan B” in case of political or economic instability.
Malta’s citizenship-by-investment programme is one of the most attractive in Europe. Through the Naturalisation for Exceptional Services by Direct Investment route, investors who meet the criteria (including a minimum investment of €690,000) can apply for citizenship after one to three years.
The country also allows dual citizenship, so Americans can keep their US passport while benefiting from Malta’s, which offers visa-free travel to over 180 countries.
With global uncertainty pushing more high-net-worth individuals to think ahead, Malta’s blend of lifestyle, stability, and EU access is proving more appealing than ever.
