Malta Secures Major EU Funding For Second Phase Of Freeport Shore Power Project

Malta has just landed a big win on the green front, with the EU green-lighting over €12 million in funding for the next phase of its onshore power supply project at the Malta Freeport.

The project, driven by the Ministry for Economy, Enterprise and Strategic Projects in collaboration with the Malta Freeport Corporation, was submitted earlier this year under the Connecting Europe Facility Transport Call, and stood out as one of only four projects approved across 20 submissions from EU member states.

The second phase of the project will see high-voltage shore power connections installed at South Quay Terminal 2 and West Quay Terminal 1, a step toward cleaner port operations. With a total investment of €18.4 million, Malta will be receiving a co-financing grant of €12.35 million from the European Commission.

This comes as the first phase of the project, already underway, continues its work on North Quay Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. That part of the project is co-financed by the EU’s Just Transition Facility Fund, while the newly funded phase will be supported by the Connecting Europe Facility.

To date, Malta is rolling out four onshore power supply projects in total – two at the Grand Harbour TEN-T Core Port and two at the Malta Freeport, which forms part of the TEN-T Core Port of Marsaxlokk.
